OUR COMMUNITY
In the extreme southwest corner of Oklahoma, "The Empire of Greer" has a history distinctively its own. Greer County, before statehood contained 1,571,575 acres and was larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware. It consisted of the present counties of Greer, Jackson, Harmon and the southern half of Beckham, It was bounded on the south by the Red River, on the east and north by the North Fork of the Red River and on the west by the 100th Meridian.

Mangum's town site was plotted by H.C. Sweet, a civil engineer of Texas, in 1882, at the request of Captain A.S. Mangum, who was a veteran of the Mexican War and had been granted land script as remuneration for his services in the Texas army by the Republic of Texas. In the beginning, the town was known as "Tin City" due to the use of tin cans that were flattened out and used to cover the cracks between the boards of the first houses constructed.

Many attractions and events await your visit. Mangum offers familiar favorite restaurants, with home cooking and family dining. A number of antique shops and other shopping await you. Opportunity for growth and expression can be found at the quality library, community center, theatre group and numerous churches of various denominations. Accommodations include the Mangum White House Bed & Breakfast and the Quartz Mountain Lodge.
