Little River Healthcare System Announces Scholarship Recipients

Rockdale, Texas (May 27, 2008) –One Rockdale, one Cameron, one Buckholts and two Thorndale applicants have each won a $5000 Little River Healthcare System college scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded annually to 5 individuals located in Milam County who are interested in continuing or pursuing a medical career.

The 2008 Little River Healthcare Scholarship winners are Jennifer Gelner, Kayla Kuzel, Kaleigh Page, Katie Roddam, and Branden White.

The five winners competed with 39 candidates and were judged on academic achievement and potential, leadership ability, personal character, volunteerism and community service by members of the LRHS scholarship committee.

Jennifer GelnerJennifer Gelner, a senior at C.H. Yoe High School, is the daughter of Rhonda Gelner.  She is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Class Officer, Future Farmers of America, Volleyball, Softball and Cheerleading.  Jennifer has been involved in many community activities including local food drives, Bea’s Kitchen, Milam County Crime Stoppers Haunted House, Catholic Youth Organization and others.  She will be attending Texas A&M University and plans to become a Pediatrician. 

Kayla KuzelKayla Kuzel, a 2006 graduate of Buckholts High School, is the daughter of Jeff and Sheri Kuzel.  While in high school, Kayla was very active in both school and community activities, and graduated at the top of her class.  Kayla is currently attending Tarleton State University to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.  She recently completed the LVN program at Temple College and is now a Licensed Vocational Nurse.


Kaleigh PageKaleigh Page, a 2007 graduate of Thorndale High School, is the daughter of Kenneth and Valerie Page.  Kaleigh graduated at the top of her class and was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Volleyball, Basketball, Track and Cheerleading.  Kaleigh is currently attending Tarleton State University where she was named to the Distinguished Students List, Fall 2007.  Kaleigh plans on continuing her coursework to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.


Katie Roddam Katie Roddam, a 2007 graduate of Rockdale High School, is the daughter of Ward and Kathryne Roddam.  During high school Katie was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Business Professionals of America, Future Farmers of America, Cheerleading and Softball.  Katie has been involved in many community activities including local blood drives, Rockdale Extreme Days, Christmas Round-Up, Meals on Wheels, HOST Program at Texas A&M and others.  Katie is currently attending Texas A&M to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

Branden WhiteBranden White, a senior at Thorndale High School, is the son of Roy White.  Branden White is a Class Officer, member of the prom committee, Thorndale High School Band and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.  Branden has been involved in community activities including Thorndale Cares, Thorndale Youth Baseball League, and piano player for San Gabriel Christian Church.  He will be attending Temple College to earn a Pharmacy Technician certification, with plans of becoming a Pharmacist.
