March is National Athletic Training Month March 1, 2010 The month of March, 2010, marks the 9th Annual celebration of National Athletic Training month. This year’s theme for the 30,000 members of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), is “Sports Safety Is A Team Effort.” The NATA, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, strongly supports its members through research and education. During the month of March, nationally certified athletic trainers will be taking part in numerous activities and events aimed at recognizing and boosting awareness of the athletic training profession. Athletic trainers are widely respected medical professionals who have extensive education (at least one college degree) and experience in the areas of prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries & illnesses that occur to athletes and the physically active. The athletic training profession is recognized as an allied health profession by the American Medical Association (AMA). Athletic trainers play vital roles high schools, colleges, therapy clinics and corporate & industrial settings. Not only must a person pass a rigorous three-part exam to earn certification, they must participate in extensive continuing education. Over 60% of Athletic Trainers have Masters Degrees or higher. Our Athletic Trainer is Henry Hawkins (Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop and Little River Healthcare - Rockdale). Henry currently coordinates Athletic Training & Sportsmedicine services for area schools through Lakeside Hospital's Orthopedic Department in Bastrop and Richards Memorial Hospital's Orthopedic & Specialty Department in Rockdale, Texas.
